CHIFOO presents "Presumptive Design Workshop: Bounded Irrational Design Research Process" with Leo Frishberg, Phase II!
Based on his (and Charles Lambdin's) recently published book, Presumptive Design: Design Provocations for Innovation, Frishberg leads a half day workshop that turns the usual Discover | Define | Design process on its head. Presumptive Design (PrD) begins with the design of an artifact to provoke meaningful interactions and conversations with end-users. PrD is a low-cost method for reducing the risk of inventing the future.
Attendees will learn the theoretical frameworks on which it is based as well as have ample opportunity to practice the method. Topics include: the Owen/Kumar/Sato Design Thinking framework, the five principles of PrD, when it works and when it doesn't and much much more. As an added bonus, all workshop attendees will receive a signed copy of the book.

For over 40 years, Leo has a B.A. in Environmental Planning from UCSC and an M.Arch from SCI-ARC. In 1984, Leo began his career as a User Experience Architect. In 2004, Leo began to formalize his approach to design research, a process he calls Presumptive Design.

Hello jammers! Global Game Jam gives us an opportunity to develop a game amongst friends and new acquaintances in 48 hours with the Portland Indie Game Squad community!
We will begin on Friday evening at the Art Institute of Portland with a keynote, icebreakers, idea generating activities, and team selection (approx. 1-2 hours). After jammers are satisfied with their ideas and teams, they will work on their games until we approach our deadline on Sunday afternoon, when we can share our games with each other in a showcase event! To support a fun, inspiring environment, jammers are welcome to stay on site at the Art Institute for the entire weekend.
Jammers are considered officially registered when they have a ticket via this Eventbrite site. Global Game Jam website registration will occur the weekend of the jam. We have room for 90 jammers. If more than 90 people come to the event and plan to participate for the entire weekend, Eventbrite site registrants will be accepted first, then pigsquad.com registrants, then PIGSquad Facebook group registrants, then first-come-first-served. Portlanders in web and mobile tech are creating cool new apps, services and companies. But we aren't sharing them nearly enough. Demolicious shines a well-deserved spotlight on some of the best work. Previous presenters have gone on to raise money from PIE, the Portland Seed Fund and other investors.
Demolicious is a free event open to the public, but for planning purposes we ask that you register your place. There are also booster and investor tickets that give you some special access and the extra-special feeling of supporting your tech community.

PRESENTATIONS at 7pm: Making the Most of the lib Directory in a Rails App - Brett ChalupaWhere does code goes that does not cleanly fit within the MVC structure that Rails suggests? Does one create a new folder within the app directory and introduce a new concept to the app? The vendor directory?! Should it go in a gem? When the conventions of Rails do not cover a concept or approach, it is difficult to know where to put classes and modules.
Over the years, I have been putting more code in the lib directory. It allows for more object oriented code composition, faster tests, and a clear path for extraction into gems. Working in a directory with nothing but a "tasks" directory can be a bit daunting at first, but soon enough it will start to feel like home.
In this talk, I want to show the benefits of putting code in the lib directory, when to put code in lib, how to test code in lib, how to configure a Rails application to use the lib directory, and common pitfalls to watch out for. There will be plenty of examples, open source code to reference, and hopefully other folks sharing their experiences with the lib directory.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.

ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. From sewing to electronics to art projects, this will be an incubator for interesting collaborations. For example, if someone comes in to work on an embroidery project, another could show them how to incorporate conductive thread and LEDs to make that project light up. Tips and tricks that can be shared varied depending on who comes to the event. Things shared at previous events include working with Arduino, programming, sculpting, knitting, hand sewing, misc hobbyist electronics tips from component suppliers to soldering tricks.

It's happening again. Portland Startup Week! We're excited to be teaming up with WeWork at the Custom House for this year's event.
Remember last year? Over 85 over you showed up and we nearly shut down Glyph. This year we're taking this to WeWork's event space, but we still have some limitations on space. That being said, we'll have a capacity of 75 people.

A Design Thinking Session with Developers, Designers, Government, Industry and Donuts
Hack Oregon opens its doors twice a year to assemble interdisciplinary focus teams of volunteers to build open-data resources on important themes in Oregon. Our projects take roughly three months to complete, and there are staggered start times for different roles within our build cycle.
This is a special event to brainstorm goals, build relationships, and create a shared vision for the next cycle of projects.
At the Summit we'll introduce new themes for projects, assemble teams, and collaborate with fantastic context experts and mentors through guided design thinking sessions.
We won't be coding this afternoon, but it's a exciting space for cross-pollination between disciplines while we take the afternoon to collaborate, plan, and constructively brainstorm.
Some of you will get started hacking the following week, and others we'll see 6-8 weeks later when we start the visual and storytelling phase.
